The Associated Presshas learned the hard way that the Food and Drug Administration is taking the step of issuing a letter to the makers of erectile dysfunction drugs, and has also been stepping in to warn consumers, that Viagra, the popular drug for impotence, is not the only erection-enhancing drug available.
In an official letter to the makers, Pfizer said Tuesday that it was "taking the necessary steps" to "ensure that the safety and efficacy of this medication do not exceed those of the Food and Drug Administration."
The letter, sent by Pfizer's vice president for corporate affairs for Pfizer, "provides the FDA with ample information regarding the safety, efficacy, and possible adverse effects of Viagra, as well as information about the drug's interaction with other drugs in the class of phosphodiesterase inhibitors," the FDA said in a statement. "Pfizer is taking these safety and efficacy considerations as part of its ongoing effort to address the issue of Viagra's safety and efficacy."
The letter, sent to all four major drug companies, is based on an FDA advisory panel that has recommended that Viagra remain under consideration for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, a condition in which men have trouble getting or keeping an erection firm enough for sexual activity. But the panel said the drug is not a "safe and effective treatment" for this condition.
"Pfizer's decision to include Viagra as a treatment for erectile dysfunction is neither a denial of benefits nor an unproven safety issue," the FDA said in a statement.
Since 1998, Viagra has been the drug of choice for many men with erectile dysfunction, the FDA said, but it is the drug that is the subject of an advisory panel's concerns and "should be the first-line treatment of choice for this condition."
Viagra was the first prescription-only medication approved for this condition. Pfizer's patent for the drug expired in 2003, and it is expected that the drug will become available over the next few years. But the drug's patent expires on June 17, 2006, and Pfizer says it intends to appeal the decision.
"The FDA should continue to follow its safety and efficacy committee and advise users about the drug's safety and efficacy," the FDA said in a statement.
As a drug, Viagra is prescribed only for impotence, and has not been approved for other uses. But since 1998, many men with erectile dysfunction have been taking it for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
In 2005, a "prospective" study of nearly 2,000 men with erectile dysfunction in the United States was halted after it found that Viagra, which is similar to the popular pill, did not work for the men. A year later, researchers had to withdraw the study.
Viagra is approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in 50% of men, according to the FDA. It is approved for men who suffer from the condition. And since 1998, about a dozen other drugs have been approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Viagra and other drugs that work on the retina are known as "proopes," or "rections," and have been used by millions of men worldwide for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Viagra has been on the market since 1998, and is the first drug approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. But since 1998, several other drugs have been approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, including Cialis, Levitra, Cialis XR, and Staxyn.
Some of Viagra's most popular drugs have been made by pharmaceutical companies. For example, Levitra and Staxyn each are approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Cialis is approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in approximately 80% of men. It was also approved for use as a treatment for enlarged prostates in 80% of men. Cialis XR, for example, has been approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in 60% of men.
Viagra, a drug that works on the retina, has not been approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, and does not have to be taken for the treatment of impotence. Viagra is the most prescribed prescription-only medication in the world.
